27.2.1 ZACHARIAH SPARKS (born 1796)

In the September, 1961, issue of The Sparks Quarterly, there appeared an article entitled "27. Zachariah Sparks (died 1781) of South Carolina." This article also contains a sketch of 27.2 William Sparks (1772-1862), son of 27. Zachariah Sparks. 27.2 William Sparks married Mary Palmer in South Carolina ca. 1795. She was the daughter of Joshua Palmer, a prominent minister of the Baptist Church. The oldest child of William and Mary (Palmer) Sparks was 27.2.1 Zachariah Sparks (obviously named for his grandfather) who was born in 1796 in Laurens County, South Carolina.
27.2.1 Zachariah Sparks, son of William and Mary (Palmer) Sparks, accompanied his parents to Indiana in 1812. On May 16, 1815, he was married in Franklin County, Indiana, to Elizabeth Carter. By 1824 he was living in Johnson County, Indiana, where, on November 20, 1824, he sold land to Isaac Collier and Richard Piles; on the deed Zachariah and his wife, Elizabeth, were listed as being residents of Johnson County. By 1827, Zachariah and Elizabeth had moved to Rush County, Indiana, where they sold land to John Kirkpatrick on January 27, 1827. Zachariah Sparks was listed on the 1830 census of Rush County as between 30 and 40 years of age; his wife was listed as between 20 and 30. Living, with them were six children, doubtless their own (only the head of the family was listed by name on the 1830 census, other members were simply enumerated by age group.) In Zachariah's family was a boy aged between 5 and 10; another boy under 5 years; two girls between 5 and 10; and 2 girls under 5 years.
In 1832, when their son Amaziah Sparks was born, Zachariah and Elizabeth were living in Hancock County, Indiana, but later they apparently returned to Rush County. The last record found in Rush County pertaining to Zachariah Sparks is a deed dated September 12, 1835. How much longer they remained in Indiana is not known, but by 1850 the family had moved to Livingston County, Missouri. By 1850, Zachariah's wife, Elizabeth, had died and he had married a woman named Temperance, born ca. 1796 in North Carolina. Temperance was probably a widow when Zachariah married her, and the fact that living with Zachariah and Temperance in 1850 were Franklin Brown, aged 18, and Edward Brown, aged 15, suggests that perhaps Temperance was their mother by a previous marriage to FNU Brown. Zachariah and Temperance had no children of their own.
What became of Zachariah Sparks after 1850 is not known. No one named Sparks was listed on the 1860 census of Livingston County, Missouri. Zachariah and Elizabeth (Carter) Sparks were the parents of the following ten children:

27.2.1.1 Stephen Sparks, son of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Carter) Sparks, was born ca. 1821 and died in Chillicothe, Missouri, ca. 1859. He was married ca. 1843 to Mary Fitzpatrick, a daughter of Jacob and Lurana (Haywood) Fitzpatrick. She was born in Tennessee ca. 1821 and died ca. 1892 in Missouri. Soon after their marriage in Indiana, they moved to Davis County, Iowa, where they were living in 1850. Later they moved to Missouri. They had the following children:

27.2.1.1.1 John Washington Sparks, son of Stephen and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Sparks, was born in Davis County, Iowa, in 1844, and died in Missouri in 1866. He enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 17 and served four years as a corporal in Company F, Eleventh Missouri Cavalry. His sword, which he carried in every Confederate State between 1861 and 1865, is now owned by Alice May Sparks and her brother, Ernest Leroy Sparks. John W. Sparks conntracted tuberculosis while serving in the army and he died as a result of this disease in 1866. In 1865, at the close of the war, he was married in Missouri to Emma Cole. They had one child,

27.2.1.1.2 Lurana Elizabeth Sparks, daughter of Stephen and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Sparks, was born in 1846 in Davis County, Iowa, and died in Oklahoma ca. 1925. She was married in Missouri to her second cousin, Isaac Fitzpatrick. They had the following children:

27.2.1.1.3 William Sparks, son of Stephen and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Sparks, was born February 17, 1848, in Davis County, Iowa. He was named originally William Wallace Sparks, for the hero in the story called "The Scottish Chiefs," but he never liked the middle name "Wallace" and dropped it. When he was six years old, he went with his parents to Livingston County, Missouri. He was married at Chillicothe in Livingston County on October 8, 1874, to Mary Emily Risley, daughter of Duncan and Sarah (Wolfe) Bisley. She was born January 26,1853, at Warsaw, Illinois. When she was quite young, the family had moved to Iowa and when she was thirteen they had moved to Chillicothe, Missouri. William and Emily became members of the Christian Church in 1876. They went to Kansas and homesteaded land in Osborne County in 1883 and lived there five years. In the fall of 1888, they came to Waitsburg, Washington, and the following year to Douglas County, Washington, where they lived and reared their family. On June 26, 1926, they moved to Sunnyside, Washington, where William Sparks died on March 7, 1933. His wife died in Sunnyside on February 27, 1930. The following sketch was written by E. L. Sparks, youngest child of William Sparks:
"William Sparks joined the Missouri State Militia near the close of the Civil War, the 33rd Regiment. He was a substitute for G. M. Wilson, and he answered at roll call to that name. He and two other men were one day sent on a scout to capture a rebel who was visiting home on a furlough and were away most of the day. While they were on their scout, Bill Anderson, the infamous Rebel Guerrilla, and his band of bushwhackers, got in battle formation to attack the Union lines. They were on horseback and Bill Anderson gave the famous Rebel yell, ordered a charge, put spurs to his horse and rode at a gallop toward the Union lines. It is supposed he never looked around, and never stopped until they had swum their horses across the Missouri River. So he came on alone, shooting. He carried six revolvers, two in his holsters, two in his boot tops, and two in his saddle bags. He emptied one gun and three shots from the other, but hit no one. The whole Union regiment was firing at him and never registered a hit on him or his horse, so he rode right through the lines. Major Cox, the commander, drew his revolver and fired one shot, hitting Anderson in the hat band, killing him instantly. He was riding a big dappled gray mare and when he fell, his horse stopped. When my father got back to camp, he heard the story, saw the horse, also Anderson's hat and equipment, and the blood on the saddle. The family learned more than fifty years later that my wife's grandfather, Joe Turner, was Anderson's flag bearer, but he and Dad never talked it over."
William and Mary Emily (Risley) Sparks were the parents of the following children:

27.2.1.1.3.3 Alice May Sparks, daughter of William and Mary Emily (Risley) Sparks, was born May 4, 1879, at Austin, Bates County, Missouri. She has been a teacher and now lives at R. 2, Sunnyside, Washington. (Editor's note: Miss Sparks is the compiler of this record of the descendants of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Carter) Sparks.)
27.2.1.1.3.4 Josie Averie Sparks, daughter of William and Mary Emily (Risley) Sparks, was born September 23, 1881, at Richill, Bates County, Missouri, and died in November, 1951, at Yakima, Washington. She was married on April 1, 1906, at Waterville, Washington, to Amos E. Johnson, son of Andrew and Elna (Mortenson) Johnson. He was born March 19, 1881, at Denton, Texas. They were the parents of three children:
27.2.1.1.3.4.1 Theresa Johnson, born January 22, 1907, at Waterville, Washington. She was married at Shelby, Montana, in 1926, to Arnold A. Anderson. Both are teachers. They have a daughter named Marilyn, born in 1936, in Colville, Washington.
27.2.1.1.3.4.2 Hazel C. Johnson, born December 15, 1907, in Waterville, Washington. She was married in Yakima, Washington, in 1942, to Lloyd Nord. They have two children:

27.2.1.1.3.4.3 Lyle E. Johnson, born February 12, 1912, in Kennewick, Washington. He is now retired from the Navy. He was married ca. 1938 in Philadelphia to Ann Davis. They are the parents of three children:

27.2.1.1.3.5 Dellesena Sparks, daughter of William and Mary Emily (Risley) Sparks, was born October 2, 1883, at Proctorville, Missouri, and died on February 23, 1953, at Seattle, Washington. She was a school teacher. She was married in 1926 in Spokane, Washington, to Edward Kahl, who was born December 11, 1879. He died in Seattle. They were the parents of one child:

She was married on June 29, 1946, at Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Thomas James Wrigley, who was a son of Edwin Girarde and Laura (Bourgeois) Wrigley. He was born April 1, 1926, at Lake Charles, Louisiana. They are the parents of two children:

27.2.1.1.3.6 William Henry Sparks, son of William and Mary Emily (Risley) Sparks, was born April 17, 1886, at Osborne, Kansas, He was married on January 1, 1908, in Waterville, Washington, to Etta Lucile McElhiriney, daughter of Andrew David and Matilda (Hendricks) McElhinney. She was born January 16, 1887. They have two children:
27.2.1.1.3.6.1 Ralph Hendricks Sparks, born November 26, 1910, at Waterville, Washington. He was married on April 19, 1937, in Los Angeles to Margie Elmore, who was born April 9, 1910. He was married on November 1, 1936, at Glendale, California., to Myrtle Cowfer, daughter of Amos and Ruth (Klabe) Cowfer. 27.2.1.1.3.7 Ernest Leroy Sparks, son of William and Mary Emily (Risley) Sparks, was born August 23, 1891, at Waterville, Washington. He was married on May 22, 1917, at Chelan, Washington, to Mildred Ella Robertson, daughter of Jack Robertson. She was born April 10, 1898, at Colfax, Washington. Ernest Leroy Sparks served as a policeman at Toppenish, Washington, and as a guard at Walla Walla, Washington, State Penitentiary. Ernest Leroy and Mildred Ella (Robertson) Sparks are the parents of the following children:
27.2.1.1.3.7.1 Merle Alene Sparks, born March 28, 1918, at Waterville, Washington. She was married on October 18, 1938, at Sunnyside, Washington, to Otto Blum, son of Henry and Mary (Ulrich) Blum. She was born January 6, 1914, at Hebron, North Dakota. They are the parents of five children, all born at Sunnyside:

He was an Aviation Electronics Technician First Class at the time of his death. He was married on October 26, 1946, at Norfolk, Virginia, to Connie Ciolli.
27.2.1.1.3.7.3 Maynard Earl Sparks, son of Ernest Leroy and Mildred Ella (Robertson) Sparks, was born December 11, 1927, at Sunnyside, Washington. He was married on September 27, 1946, at Yakima, Washington, to Cleta Lamb, daughter of Adrian and Brooks (Phillips) Lamb. She was born December 21, 1928, at Ulman, Missouri. They have five children:

He is a Security Patrolman at Hanford, Washington, for G.E. and the Atomic Energy Commission. He was married on October 17, 1955, at Grandview, Washington, to Darlin Mae Clark, daughter of Paul and Sunny June (Tuttle) Clark. She was born December 4, 1936, at Portland, Oregon. They were divorced and Ronald married as his second wife, Jeraldine Benton at Sunnyside, Wash., on December 4, 1959. 27.2.1.1.3.7.5 Dorothy Mae Sparks, daughter of Ernest Leroy and Mildred Ella (Robertson) Sparks, was born July 27, 1937, at Sunnyside, Washington. She was married on June 9, 1956, at Etonville, Washington, to Bruce Thomas Scurlock, son of Stanley and Christine (Norberg) Scurlock. He was born November 12, 1930, at Tacoma, Washington. They have one child, 27.2.1.1.3.7.5.1 Susan Carla Scurlock, born December 9, 1957, at Morton, Washington.
27.2.1.1.3.7.6 Robert William Sparks, son of Ernest Leroy and Mildred Ella (Robertson) Sparks, was born July 27, 1937, at Sunnyside, Washington, a twin of Dorothy Mae Sparks.
27.2.1.1.4 Jacob Zachariah Sparks, son of Stephen and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Sparks, was born in 1850 in Iowa. He died in infancy.
27.2.1.1.5 Lucinda Jane Sparks, daughter of Stephen and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Sparks, was born in 1852 in Missouri, and died in Hinton, Oklahoma., in 1942. She married John Hamilton in Missouri ca. 1871. They were the parents of eight children:

27.2.1.4 Zachariah Sparks, Jr. was born ca. 1827 in Indiana. By 1850 he had moved to Davis County, Iowa, and was living with his sister, Rebecca, and her husband, when the 1850 census was taken. He married Syrilda Tucker and, like other members of the family, moved to Kansas ca. 1855. It is known that he went to California before the Civil War and eventually lived in Tacoma, Washington. No other record of descendants.
27.2.1.5 Nancy Sparks, daughter of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Carter) Sparks, married James Frezell. They had the following children:

27.2.1.6 Amaziah Sparks, son of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Carter) Sparks, was born in Knightstown, Hancock County, Indiana, on April 13, 1832. (Some of his descendants believe that his full name was Robert Amaziah Sparks, but in all official records his name appears simply as Amaziah.) Sometime prior to 1850, he moved with his father to Livingston County, Missouri; he was listed on the 1850 census as 17 years old and living with his father and step-mother. By 1855, he had moved to Leavenworth, Kansas. On February 19, 1851, according to a statement which he made in 1915, he married Elizabeth Ann Rolston. She died at Leavenworth, Kansas, on October 27, 1857 or 1858. They were the parents of three children. On December 4, 1859, Amaziah Sparks married, second, Sarah Ann Fowler, in Jefferson County, Kansas. On September 12, 1863, Amaziah Sparks enlisted as a private in Company C of the 15th Regiment, Kansas Cavalry of the Union Army and was honorably discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on October 19, 1865. He was described at that time as a farmer, of light complexion, with blue eyes, five feet nine inches tall. In his pension application made many years later, Amaziah stated that his second wife, Sarah Ann, had "stayed at home during the war and took care of the three orphan children by my first wife and two of the others by her."
Following the war, Amaziah Sparks moved with his family to Yamhill County, Oregon, then to Modoc County, California, then to Lewis County, Washington, later to Linn County, Oregon, then to Klickitat County, Washington, and finally again to Lewis County, Washington. When he made application for a pension in 1890, he gave his residence as Mossy Rock, Lewis County, Washington. He died there on September 6, 1918, at the age of 86. His second wife, Sarah Ann, had died on October 27, 1913, at Cheholis, Washington. When he applied for a pension in 1890, he stated that he was "disqualified from earning support from manual labor" because of heart disease, injury to testicle, and rupture and disabled left hand and failing eye sight."
Amaziah Sparks was the father of fourteen children, three by his first wife and eleven by his second. The three children by his first wife, Elizabeth Ann, were:

She married in Seattle, Washington, James Edward Stone on August 8, 1890. He was born December 19, 1842, in La Porte County, Indiana, and died November 25, 1931, in Los Angeles, California. Sarah Jane was his second wife. They were the parents of the following children:

27.2.1.6.4.2 Edith Tabitha Stone, born February 16, or April 7, 1892, in Kittitas County, Washington.

27.2.1.6.4.4 Ernest Victor Stone, born September 22, 1895, in Chelan County, Washington. He married Ina Edna Lewis on June 22, 1930.
27.2.1.6.4.5 Waster Burchard Stone, born August 18, 1896, in Kittitas County, Washington.
27.2.1.6.4.6 Esther Inez Stone, born March 22, 1898, in Chelan County, Washington. She died January 31, 1946, at Willcox, Arizona. She married Ben D. White.
27.2.1.6.4.7 Blanche Goldie Stone, born January 31, 1900, at Chelan County, Washington. She died October 20, 1954, in San Pedro, California. She married Glenn Alexander June 18, 1921.
27.2.1.6.5 Ella Rebecca (or Rebecca Ella) Sparks was born November 6, 1863, in Leavenworth County, Kansas. She died September 29, 1892.
27.2.1.6.6 Emma Frances Sparks was born April 4, 1866, in Leavenworth County, Kansas. She died on March 14, 1947, in Portland, Oregon. She married in 1891 Howard Marion Wilson, who was born in Ohio on July 1, 1853, and died in Portland, Oregon, November 1, 1928. They had the following children, all born in the state of Washington:

27.2.1.6.6.3 Ralph Amaziah Wilson, born April 25, 1894; he married on May 18, 1925, Zuta Chalbendar.
27.2.1.6.6.4 Lee Howard Wilson, born December 1, 1900; he married on October 14, 1926, Elsie Prussler.
27.2.1.6.6.5 Walter Wesley Wilson, born September 25, 1903; unmarried.
27.2.1.6.6.6 Fred William Wilson, born January 28, 1907; he married in October 1931, Margaret Harriger.
27.2.1.6.7 Ida Bell Sparks was born November 29, 1868, in Yexnhill County, Oregon; she died on May 8, 1905.
27.2.1.6.8 Mary Annie Sparks was born March 11, 1871, in Modoc County, California.
27.2.1.6.9 May Zeralda Sparks was born either on November 14, 1873, or May 14, 1874, in Lewis County, Washington. She married John Rich.
27.2.1.6.10 Effie Melinda Sparks was born March 28, 1876, in Linn County, Oregon. She married, first, Edson Rose; second, James Grimes.
27.2.1.6.11 Loda Lenore Sparks was born August 7, 1878 or 1879, in Klickitat County, Washington, and died April 3, 1955. She married, first George Miller; second, George Strange.
27.2.1.6.12 Lela Leona Sparks was born December 6, 1880 or 1881, in Klickitat County, Washington. She married, first, Forrest Scammon; second, Elmer Grubb.
27.2.1.6.13 Gracie Marie Sparks was born April 9, 1884, in Lewis County, Washington. She married Ira Ray and had a daughter named 27.2.1.6.13.1 Syneva Marie Ray born September 20, 1903.
27.2.1.6.14 Martha Elverda Sparks was born May 17, 1886 in Lewis County, Washington. She was called "Verda." She married, first, William E. Burdette; second, H. E. Stevenson. She may also have been the Alberty Sparks who married Gene McCandless and had two children, named Hilda Arland McCandless, born April 2, 1908; and John A. McCandless, born May 20, 1909.

Malinda married as her second husband, Ashcraft Paton. They moved to Iowa and had one child:
