21.1.1.5.3 PHOEBE SMITH SPARKS, 1803-1863


21.1.1.5.3 Phoebe Smith Sparks, third child and eldest daughter of Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks, probably was born in Madison County, Virginia, on January 8, 1803, and died July 13, 1863. She is buried on the Sparks farm north of Pleasureville, Kentucky. She remained on the farm in Kentucky and, because she was an invalid, she was given the greater part of her father's estate. She never married.


21.1.1.5.4 THOMAS JAMESON SPARKS, 1804-1865


21.1.1.5.4 Thomas Jameson Sparks, fourth child and third son of Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks, probably was born in Madison County, Virginia, on October 10, 1804. In 1831 he married a daughter of 21.1.3 Humphrey and Milly (Nalle) Sparks. (Humphrey Sparks, father of Mariah, was a brother of 21.1.1 John Sparks, who was Thomas Jameson Sparks's grandfather; thus Thomas Jameson Sparks and his wife, 21.1.3.11 Mariah Sparks, were first cousins once removed.) The marriage bond is dated October 17, 1831.

Thomas Jameson and Mariah (Sparks) Sparks had a son (probably their only child) named 21.1.1.5.4.1 Abraham G. Sparks who was born ca. 1835. He died at the age of 20 in Henry County, Kentucky, in 1855. Mariah also died in 1855, aged 59 years.

In 1856 Thomas Jameson Sparks married as his second wife, Mildred Sparks. We have not been able to identify Mildred Sparks; she may have been a widow. Thomas Jameson Sparks died in Henry County, Kentucky, in 1865. He made his will on June 6, 1865, and it was probated on June 24, 1865. He left his entire estate to his second wife, Mildred.


21.1.1.5.5 WILLIAM MADISON SPARKS, 1806-1879


21.1.1.5.5 William Madison Sparks, fifth child and fourth son of Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks, probably was born in Madison County, Virginia, on August 30, 1806, and died in Missouri on November 20, 1879, He was married in Kentucky ca. 1830 to Parthesia Baker, who was born October 14, 1812, and died May 28, 1863, They are both buried at Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery near Shelbiria, Missouri, They were the parents of eight children:

21.1.1.5.5.1 Pauline ["Polina"] B. Sparks was born in Kentucky on April 6, 1832, and died April 23, 1860. She married C. B. Whitehead, who was born October 28, 1830, and died on January 27, 1892; he married as his second wife, Sarah M. MNU, who was born in 1845 and died April 28, 1878. He and both his wives are buried at Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery near Shelbina, Missouri. C. B. Whitehead and his first wife, Pauline B. Sparks, were the parents of two children:

21.1.1.5.5.1.1 Elnora Whitehead; she married FNU Patton.
21.1.1.5.5.1.2 William Stout ["Buddy"] Whitehead.

21.1.1.5.5.2 Elizabeth ["Betty"] Sparks was born in Kentucky in March 1835, and died April 12, 1877. She married Thomas Magruder on March 31, 1851; he was born in 1820 and died in 1896. They are buried at Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery near Shelbina, Missouri. They were the parents of six children:

21.1.1.5.5.2.1 Jemima Magruder, born January 20, 1852; died 1857.
21.1.1.5.5.2.2 William T. ["Buddy"] Magruder, born April 16, 1853; died March 8, 1915.
21.1.1.5.5.2.3 Hiram Magruder, born May 19, 1855; died October 17, 1856.
21.1.1.5.5.2.4 Charles N. Magruder, born November 22, 1860; died 1862.
21.1.1.5.5.2.5 Shelby W. Magruder, born May 19, 1866.
21.1.1.5.5.2.6 Robert Franklin Magruder, born January 15, 1877, died 1928; he married Laura L. Burks, who was born in 1877 and died in 1937.

21.1.1.5.5.3 Eliza F. Sparks was born in Kentucky in March 1835 (she was a twin of Elizabeth), and died May 8, 1862. She never married.
21.1.1.5.5.4 Sarah J. Sparks was born August 15, 1840, and died February 10, 1906, She was married in 1875 to John Gregory Buckman, who was born July 18, 1842, and died December 25, 1909. They are buried in Shelbina, Missouri. They had two children:

21.1.1.5.5.4.1 Infant son Buckman, born and died December 18, 1876.
21.1.1.5.5.4.2 Ida Mae Buckman, born in Monroe County, Missouri, on April 26, 1878. She was married on December 18, 1901, to J. Willie Wilt, who was born April 18, 1873, and died July 22, 1920. Ida married again on December 14, 1929, to Elias T. Caldwell, who was born December 7, 1873, and died February 23, 1941. Willie Wilt and Elias Caldwell are buriedin Shelbina, Missouri. By her first husband, J. Willie Wilt, Ida Mae Buckman had one son:

21.1.1.5.5.4.2.1 Gregory Wilt who was born April 20, 1917; he married Ruby Brown on June 4, 1939, and they have one son:

21.1.1.5.5.4.2.1.1 Ted Wilt, who was born September 12, 1942, Ted Wilt was married on December 10, 1966, to June Meddows.

21.1.1.5.5.5 Charles Sparks was born December 4, 1843, and died August 24, 1863, He did not marry.
21.1.1.5.5.6 Robert F. Sparks was born in June 1844 and died in March 1889.
21.1.1.5.5.7 Mary Ann Sparks - no information.

21.1.1.5.5.8 William Franklin Sparks was born January 4, 1853, and died May 7, 1893. He married 21.1.1.5.6.8 Phoebe Ann (Sparks) McConnell on October 6, 1877. She was the daughter of 21.1.1.5.6 Henry Jefferson Sparks; and widow of James William McConnell. William Franklin Sparks and Phoebe Ann were first cousins. She was born in Kentucky on August 16, 1847, and died in 1929. Following the death of William Franklin Sparks, she married as her third husband, Spurghian Gaiel Parsons. William Franklin and Phoebe Ann (Sparks) Sparks were the parents of two children:

21.1.1.5.5.8.1 (21.1.1.5.6.8.2) Emmett Weldon Sparks, born November 18, 1879, died March 1, 1956. He married Jessie Marie Smock, who was born June 16, 1882. They had two daughters:

21.1.1.5.5.8.1.1 (21.1.1.5.6.8.2.1) Phoebe Smock Sparks, born August 24, 1911; she married Jack Corkins on November 20, 1934.
21.1.1.5.5.8.1.2 (21.1.1.5.6.8.2.2) Jennie Sue Sparks, born December 12, 1915; she married David Watkins on June 24, 1936. They had four children:

21.1.1.5.5.8.1.2.1 (21.1.1.5.6.8.2.2.1) Phoebe Ann Watkins, born March 23, 1937;
21.1.1.5.5.8.1.2.2 (21.1.1.5.6.8.2.2.2) David Watkins, born September 22, 1940;

21.1.1.5.5.8.2 (21.1.1.5.6.8.3) Vilette Nellis ["Lettie"] Sparks was born January 6, 1882, and died February 26, 1951. She married William Henry White on November 18, 1903; he was a son of Henry Harrison White, Sr., and Eliza H.(Whiteside) White and was born November 14, 1878. Lettie is buried in Shelbina, Missouri.


21.1.1.5.6 HENRY JEFFERSON SPARKS, 1808-1888


21.1.1.5.6 Henry Jefferson Sparks, son of Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks, was born in Shelby County, Kentucky, near Pleasureville, on March 30, 1808, and died on February 28, 1888; he is buried in the Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery near Shelbina, Missouri. He married (first) Nancy Threlkeld on December 9, 1830. Nancy was born April 20, 1812, and died September 16, 1855; she is buried on the James Parnell Sparks farm southwest of Shelbina, Missouri. Henry Jefferson Sparks married as his second wife, Jane Threlkeld (Nancy's sister); Jane was born April 12, 1816, and died November 4, 1855. They had no children.

Henry then married as this third wife, Mrs. Sarah (Pearcy) Whitlow. She was the widow of John Whitlow and a sister of Martha (Pearcy) Sparks. Sarah Whitlow was the wife of 21.1.1.5.8 Robert Sparks. 21.1.1.5.8 Robert Sparks was a brother of 21.1.1.5.6 Henry Jefferson Sparks. Sarah was born April 16, 1821, and died February 6, 1865. She is buried at the Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery. Henry Jefferson Sparks had a total of eleven children.

21.1.1.5.6.1 Mary Elizabeth Sparks was born in 1832 and died in 1846 at the age of 14 years.

21.1.1.5.6.2 Oliver T. (or S.) Sparks, son of Henry Jefferson and Nancy (Threlkeld) Sparks, was born June 13, 1833, and died October 4, 1862. He was married in Henry County, Kentucky, on October 12, 1854, to Susana A. Maddox, who was born September 2, 1836, and died March 16, 1915. They are buried in the Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery near Shelbina, Missouri. Oliver served in the Civil War as a captain. They were the parents of three children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.1 Notely M. Sparks was born in 1855 and died June 17, 1879. He is buried in the Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery near Shelbina, Missouri.

21.1.1.5.6.2.2 Nannie P. Sparks was born in 1857 and died in 1920. She married Thomas M. Rash, who was born in 1856 and died in 1924. They had five ohildren:

21.1.1.5.6.2.2.1 Joella Rash, born November 4, 1880, died December 21, 1917. She married Notely S. Combs, who was born October 12, 1875, and died January 9, 1935. They had three daughters:

21.1.1.5.6.2.2.1.1 Thelma Combs, born in May 1901; she married Rick Clapper, born September 5, 1898. They have three children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.2.1.1.1 Bill Not Clapper, born December 31, 193-; married Jean Brown and has a son Mike Clapper;

21.1.1.5.6.2.2.1.1.2 Caroline Clapper, married Herbert Thoxel and had a son named William Jeffrie Thoxel; and

21.1.1.5.6.2.2.1.1.3 Bickey Clapper, born June 17, 1934, married Eileen MNU, who was born September 4, 1936, and had two daughters,

21.1.1.5.6.2.2.1.1.3.1 Jill Clapper, born July 30, 1961, and
21.1.1.5.6.2.2.1.1.3.2 Kay Clapper, born April 24, 1963.

21.1.1.5.6.2.3 Henry Owen Sparks was born on August 21, 1858, and died June 15, 1946. He married Ann Valentine Witters, who was born March 6, 1865, and died May 10, 1921. They are buried at Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery. They were the parents of five children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.1 Notely Maddox Sparks was born October 12, 1880, and died December 21, 1936. He was married on December 4, 1905, to Helen Rash, who was born April 28, 1886, and died December 28, 1946. They are buried in Shelbina, Missouri. They had seven children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.1.1 Ann Adeline Sparks, born March 11, 1907; she married Henry Roth, Jr., on February12, 1928. They had three children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.1.1.1 Marion Elizabeth Roth, born December 4, 1928; married John Low on May 18, 1951, he was born August 7, 1924. They had 3 girls,

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.1.5 Carolyn Sparks was born November 19, 1915; she married on July 28, 1943, Monroe Bohrer, who was born November 7, 1912. They have five children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.1.6.1 Linda Lou Lyell, born April 15, 1942, married December 17, 1960, to Arthur Lee Culiffer; and
21.1.1.5.6.2.3.1.6.2 Edward Lyell.

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.1.7 Helen Martine Sparks was born February 24, 1927; she married on December 14, 1945, to Walter August Behring, who was born February 7, 1920, They have nine children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.3 Elizabeth ["Lizzie"] Sparks. She married (first) Claude Snell, and (second) George Wheaton.

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4 Goldie Sparks was born in 1891; she married George E. Mayfield, who was born in 1884 and died in 1951. They had four children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.1 Doris Mayfield; she married Harry K. Hawker and they had two children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.1.1 Jacquelyn Ann Hawker, who married William Dean Whitworth; and
21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.1.2 George Frederick Hawker. He married Sally Ann Galbraith.

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.2 James H. Mayfield; he married Bernice Huff and had two children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.2.1 Larry Don Mayfield; and
21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.2.2 Carla Jean Mayfield.

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.3 Ray Mayfield; he married Eunice Lasall and they had two children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.3.1 Nancy Lasall, who was Eunice's daughter; and
21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.3.2 George Owen Mayfield.

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.4 Martha Mayfield, married Raymond Winkler. They had two children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.4.1 Ronald Winkler who married Grace Mittlestead and had a daughter name
Melinda Jean Winkler; and
21.1.1.5.6.2.3.4.4.2 Robert Wayne Winkler.

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.5 June Sparks. She married Harry McPhetters and, as her second husband, Erwin Calemen. She had one child:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.5.1 Lila Rae McPhetters, who married Robert T. Miller and had four children:

21.1.1.5.6.2.3.5.1.1 Mary Margaret Miller, who married Wayne Bardman and had a daughter named Mechille Bardman;
21.1.1.5.6.2.3.5.1.2 Robert T. Miller;
21.1.1.5.6.2.3.5.1.3 Nancy Rae Miller; and
21.1.1.5.6.2.3.5.1.4 Donnie Miller.

21.1.1.5.6.3 Samuel P. Sparks, son of Henry Jefferson and Nancy (Threlkeld) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, in 1835; he married Lydia J. MNU, who was born February 2, 1840, and died May 4, 1863, and was buried at Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery. We have very little information on this family. One record lists three children: Ollie, Nellie, and Edward. Another record provided by Florence Sullivan, who has the old Nolan Bible, lists the children of Samuel P. Sparks as:

21.1.1.5.6.3.2 Mary Eilean Sparks,
21.1.1.5.6.3.3 Lula Sparks, and
21.1.1.5.6.3.4 Edward Sparks.

There is a grave on the Jesse Lee Lewis farm, south-west of Shelbina, Missouri, of 21.1.1.5.6.3.5 Nancy Jane Sparks, daughter of Samuel and Lydia Sparks, born in January 1861 and died October 3, 1861.

21.1.1.5.6.4 Martha Jane ["Mat"] Sparks was born in 1837 and was married on January 10, 1861, to William D. Gardner. He was born in Henry County, Kentucky, on July 19, 1830. Here again we have two different records. One record gives the following children:

21.1.1.5.6.4.1 Gertrude Gardner;
21.1.1.5.6.4.2 James Gardner;
21.1.1.5.6.4.3 Annie Bell Gardner, who married FNU Parsons;
21.1.1.5.6.4.4 Eugene Gardner, who married Mattie B. Vaughn; and
21.1.1.5.6.4.5 Edrick Gardner.

The record in the Nolan Bible lists the children as:

21.1.1.5.6.4.1 William D. Gardner, Jr.,
21.1.1.5.6.4.2 Anna Bell Gardner;
21.1.1.5.6.4.3 Eugene Gardner;
21.1.1.5.6.4.4 Edna Gardner;
21.1.1.5.6.4.5 Harvey Gardner; and
21.1.1.5.6.4.6 John William Gardner.

I found a grave of Nannie Price Gardner, born November 7, 1861, died August 18, 1866.

21.1.1.5.6.5 John William Sparks was born in 1840; he was married on January 13, 1865, to Elizabeth Threlkeld; after her death he married her sister, Clarisso Threlkeld on April 7, 1881.

21.1.1.5.6.6 Isabelle ["Idd"] Sparks was born October 17, 1842, and died January 8, 1930. She married Francis M. King, who was born January 31, 1835, and died September 30, 1911. They are buried in Shelbina, Missouri. They had three children:

21.1.1.5.6.6.1 Elbert J. King, born August 25, 1865, died April 10, 1951. He married Minnie Amanda Maupin, born March 4, 1866, died December 24, 1939 They are buried in Shelbina, MO
21.1.1.5.6.6.2 Eddie King, died May 8, 1869 as an infant 10 days old.
21.1.1.5.6.6.3 Annie Mattie King; she married and had two children named:

21.1.1.5.6.6.3.1 Harry LNU and
21.1.1.5.6.6.3.2 Isabelle LNU.

21.1.1.5.6.7 James Fountain Sparks, born in 1845.

21.1.1.5.6.8 Phoebe Ann ["Mitt"] Sparks was born in Missouri on August 16, 1847, and died December 4, 1929. She was married on August 31, 1865, to James McConnell, who was born in Kentucky on February 25, 1841, and died March 25, 1866. Her second marriage was to 21.1.1.5.5.8 William Franklin Sparks on October 6, 1877. William F. Sparks was a son of 21.1.1.5.5 William Madison and Parthesia (Baker) Sparks and was thus a first cousin of Phoebe Ann. (See page 1151.) William F. Sparks died May 7, 1893 and Phoebe Ann married as her third husband, Spurghian ["Spur"] Gaiel Parsons, on December 15, 1904. He was born August 29, 1844 and died in 1930. They are buried in Shelbina, Missouri. Phoebe Ann had one child by her first husband and two children by her second husband.

21.1.1.5.6.8.1 Annie Jim McConnell, daughter of Phoebe Ann Sparks and her first husband, James McConnell, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on May 22, 1866, and died September 23, 1956. She was married on October 10, 1893, to William Mosby Nolan, who was born October 17, 1864, and died March 1, 1942. They had two daughters:

21.1.1.5.6.8.1.1 Pauline Nolan, born May 28, 1895; she married Pollard Adams, who was born November 14, 18--. They had a daughter.

21.1.1.5.6.8.1.1.1 Betty Ann Adams; she married (first) Joe Kelly and married (second) Walter Grey. She had three children:

21.1.1.5.6.8.1.1.1.1 Joanne Kelly;
21.1.1.5.6.8.1.1.1.2 Lin Grey; and
21.1.1.5.6.8.1.1.1.3 Shelly Kay Grey.

21.1.1.5.6.8.1.2 Florence Nolan, born September 3, 1900; she married on July 2, 1925, Michael Sullivan, who was born October 19, 1894. They had one son:

21.1.1.5.6.8.1.2.1 William M. Sullivan, Jr., born February 22, 1929; he married Carla Wilcock, who was born April 13, 1933. They had a son named Michael Sullivan III, born December 1, 1954.

21.1.1.5.6.8.2 (21.1.1.5.5.8.1) Emmett Weldon Sparks, son of Phoebe Ann Sparks and her second husband, William F. Sparks, was born November 18, 1879. (For a record of his family see above.)

21.1.1.5.6.8.3 (21.1.1.5.5.8.2) Vilette Nellis ["Lettie"] Sparks was born January 6, 1882. (For a record of her family see above)

21.1.1.5.6.9 Nancy Alice Sparks, daughter of Henry Jefferson and Nancy (Threlkeld) Sparks, was born January 15, 1850 and died April 23, 1851, at the age of one year, 3 months and 8 days.

21.1.1.5.6.10 Sarah Ellen Sparks was born September 12, 1853, and died September 23, 1855. She is buried on the James Parnell Sparks farm.

21.1.1.5.6.11 Kate Sparks was born September 15, 1859, and died November 7, 1939. She married 21.1.1.5.1.1.x Elias Sparks, son of 21.1.1.5.1.1 Fountain C. and Phoebe Ann Sparks; he was born March 3, 1859, and died August 14, 1930. They are buried in Shelbina, Missouri. 21.1.1.5.6.12 Mattie D. Sparks, daughter of Henry Jefferson and Sarah (Pearcy) Whitlow Sparks, was born in 1862 married Silas Patterson. They had one son:

21.1.1.5.7 Mary Ann Sparks, daughter of Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks, was born in or near Pleasureville, Kentucky. She is believed to have been the seventh child and was born ca. 1809. We have no further information.
