SPARKS FAMILIES ENUMERATED
ON THE 1840 CENSUS OF INDIANA

In previous issues of the Quarterly we have published a record of the Sparks families appearing on the 1820, 1830, and 1850 censuses of the state of Indiana. Those for 1820 and 1830 appeared in the issue for September 1958, Whole No. 23, pp. 326-330. That for 1850 appeared over several issues, beginning on page 401 of that for June 1959, Whole No. 26. Here we fill in the gap between 1830 and 1850.

Indiana became a state in 1816. It then had a population of about 75,000. By 1840 the population had increased to 685,866. Heavy immigration accounted for a large portion of this increase, and until the 1840's and 1850's that immigration was almost entirely from within the United States; the great bulk coming from the Southern states.

As has been noted in the introduction to the listing of Sparkses on the 1830 census of Georgia elsewhere in this issue, only the individual considered to be the head of the household was listed by name on any federal census prior to 1850. Everyone else living in the household, including hired hands, was enumerated in age categories by sex. These age categories were the same on the 1840 census as had been used in 1830.
