FROM ADAMS AND BROWN COUNTIES, OHIO
Joan E. and Ernest Whetsell Sparks, whose permanent address is P.O. Box 65656, Lubbock, Texas, 79464, are devoting much of their retirement to travel and genealogical research. In October 1987, they spent a number of days in the courthouses of Adams and Brown Counties, Ohio, where they copied all of the Sparks marriage records that they could find. They have very kindly shared that research with us.
Salathiel Sparks (1756-1823) and Solomon Sparks (1767-1838), sons of George
Sparks of Hopewell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, came to Adams
County, Ohio, with their families in 1803 or 1804. (See the Quarterly of June
1963, Whole No. 42, pp. 727-34, for an article on George Sparks; and the Quarterly
of September 1963, Whole No. 43, pp. 747-756, for an article on Solomon Sparks
and some of his descendants.) Many of the Sparkses appearing in the following
records descend from either Salathiel
or Solomon. Readers interested in these families may also find to be of interest
the list of Sparks households appearing on the 1850 census of Ohio--see the
issue of the Quarterly for December 1977, Whole No. 100.

Major John Belli, First Recorder of the Territorial County of Adams in the Ohio

| [Note by Joan E. Sparks: "This is unusual! This marriage of Rebecca Ann Sparks and William Robe is one of those found in Elsie Ewing Rayburn's list for Adams County. We believe that it was made a matter of record in BOTH Brown and Adams Counties because of the way the information was gathered. (Brown County was formed in 1818 in part from Adams County.) Ms. Rayburn could have obtained the information from the newspaper or something. We also feel sure that this Rebecca Ann Sparks was the Rebecca Ann SHRIVER who married James Sparks on 1 January 1829. James Sparks died in January 1858, and we believe that she married William Robe on 3 November of the same year. On the tombstone for Solomon and Catherine (Hillegas) Sparks in Winchester, Adams County, Ohio, is the inscription: 'Erected to Their Memory by Rebecca Robe." She was, we believe, their daughter-in-law."] |
