21.1.1.5 ROBERT SPARKS (1777-1831) OF MADISON COUNTY, VIRGINIA,
AND HENRY COUNTY, KENTUCKY, AND HIS DESCENDANTS

by HELEN WHITE

In previous issues of the Quarterly articles have been published relating to the branch of the family to which 21.1.1.5 Robert Sparks (1777-1831) belonged. In the June, 1956, issue, Whole No. 14, pp. 129-147) appeared "The Sparks Family of Orange, Culpeper, and Madison Counties, Virginia," in which was traced the genealogy of John and Mary Sparks. 21. John Sparks, the great-grandfather of Robert Sparks, is believed to have lived in Caroline County, Virginia; he died prior to 1737 when his children moved to Orange County, Virginia. The section of Orange County in which they settled was cut off to form Culpeper County in 1748. Later, in 1793, the north-western corner of Culpeper County, where the Sparks family lived, was out off to form Madison County. The widow of John Sparks married, as her second husband, Spencer Bobo. One of the sons of John and Mary Sparks was 21.1 Thomas Sparks, born ca. 1715. Thomas Sparks married Mary Towles, daughter of Stokeley and Ann (Vallott) Towles. Thomas Sparks, who died in 1787 in that section which was then Culpeper County, was the grandfather of Robert Sparks.

The oldest child of 21.1 Thomas and Mary (Towles) Sparks was 21.1.1 John Sparks, who was born ca. 1745. He married Phoebe Smith and one of their children was 21.1.1.5 Robert Sparks (1777-1831). John and Phoebe Sparks lived and died a plantation near Oak Park in Madison County, Virginia. (A map of this area appears on page 852 of the December 1964 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 48, as part of an article devoted to "Henry Sparks (1773-1860) - of Madison County, Virginia." This Henry Sparks was another son of John and Phoebe (Smith) Sparks and was a brother of Robert.)

One of the interesting records pertaining to John Sparks which has survived in Culpeper County, is a claim which he made at the close of the American Revolution for four and three-fourths bushels of rye which he had furnished the American Army. This claim is dated October 16, 1780.

John Sparks died in Madison County in 1803. His wife, Phoebe, died there in 1814. Following is a list of the children of John and Phoebe (Smith) Sparks:

21.1.1.1 Nancy Sparks, born 1767, married Samuel Wilhoit in 1796 (marriage bond dated September 12, 1796). She died ca. 1816.
21.1.1.2 Frances (Fanny) Sparks, born ca. 1771, married William Hume.

21.1.1.3 Henry Sparks, born January 2, 1773, died January 28, 1860. He married Hannah Hume on March 10, 1803. (See the Quarterly for December 1964, Whole No. 48, pp. 850-860.)
21.1.1.4 Thomas Sparks, born ca. 1775, died May 17, 1853. He married Susanna Fishback, daughter of Harmon Fishback, on November 28, 1794. She was born July 11, 1777, and died May 21, 1850.

21.1.1.5 Robert Sparks, born February 15, 1777, died April 10, 1831; he married Isabelle Ford on July 21, 1798. She was born May 23, 1776, and died April 19, 1861.
21.1.1.6 Mary (Polly) M. Sparks, born ca. 1780. She married her cousin, 21.3.5 Jasper Sparks, son of 21.3 William and Elizabeth Sparks. She died ca. 1851.

21.1.1.7 Susan or Susanna Sparks. No further record.
21.1.1.8 Elizabeth (Betsy) Vallatty Sparks. She married Merry Aylore.

21.1.1.5 Robert Sparks, son of John and Phoebe (Smith) Sparks, was born February 15, 1777, according to his family Bible. Nothing is known of his youth, but on July 21, 1798, he was married in Madison County, Virginia, to Isabella Ford. She was born in Virginia on May 23, 1776. (Her name was often written as Isabella, and her nickname was Ibby.) She was a daughter of Abfire Ford John and Alphia (Petty) Ford of Madison County and she appears to have had a sister named Mary. On September 18, 1806, Abfire Ford deeded two slaves (named Molly and Lewis) to "my beloved daughter Mary" and a slave named Harry to "my son in law Robert Sparks." In the same deed, he gave one slave named Amy to "my daughter Mary Ford and my son in law Robert Sparks jointly." Perhaps Abfire Ford did not wish to separate the members of this slave family so deeded them to his daughter Mary and his daughter Isabelle's husband in such a way as to keep them from being separated.

[Correction Note: It has been discovered that she was a daughter of John and Alphia (Petty) Ford. It was stated above that she was a daughter of Abfire Ford, based on an 1806 deed of gift. It was assumed that Abfire Ford was her father. Actually, "Abfire Ford" was her mother (a widow in 1806) whose real name was probably spelled Alphia, although it appears in other records as Alfire, Abfire, Affire, Apphia, and Alphifia. In his will dated December 11, 1791 (Culpeper County, Va.), John Ford calls his wife Alphia Ford. There can be little doubt that she was a daughter of John and Rebecca (Sims) Petty. John Petty made his will in Orange County, Va., on July 26, 1768 (probated September 27, 1770) and named Abfire Ford as one of his children.]

21.1.1.5 Robert Sparks and his family moved from Madison County, Virginia, to Kentucky ca. 1807. His name appeared on the tax roll of Madison County for the last time in 1806, when he was taxed for one slave and five horses. Robert Sparks was probably inspired to seek a new home in Kentucky by his uncle, 21.1.5 Henry Sparks, who had settled near the present town of Monterey in Owen County, Kentucky, in 1795. (See the Quarterly of December, 1960, Whole No. 32, pp. 512-517, for data on Henry Sparks (1753-1836). Robert Sparks settled first near Pleasureville in Henry County, then ca. 1810 he moved a few miles north of Pleasureville.

In 1815, Robert's mother, Phoebe (Smith) Sparks, died at her home in Virginia. John Hume acted as Robert's attorney in helping to settle Phoebe's estate and in one of the documents which he signed be referred to "Robert Sparks and his wife Eby of Kentucky."

The earliest record which has been found pertaining to the purchase of land in Henry County, Kentucky, by Robert Sparks is a deed dated August 5, 1820, by which he bought fifty acres from Daniel Demaree, Cornelius Bice and Tunnis Vannoys for $1200 (Book 12, p. 49). On April 6, 1821, he purchased 85 acres on Drennons Lick Creek from David and Nancy Adams for $1190 (Book 9, p. 168). The only deed which has been found whereby Robert Sparks sold land was dated March 2, 1830, when he sold three and three-fourths acres on Drennons Lick Creek for $32.81¼ to Peter A. Banta of Johnston County, Indiana. Robert and Isabelle both signed this deed - - she wrote her name as "Ibby Sparks." (Book 14, p. 206)

On October 9, 1830, Robert Sparks made his will and six months later, on April 10, 1831, he died at the age of fifty-four. Following is an abstract of this will made by Paul B. Sparks a number of years ago from the recorded copy (Book 5, page 1). "... To my dearly beloved wife Isabella after all debts and funeral expenses are paid all my possessions real and personal during her widowhood and good behaviour except as is hereafter disposed of that is to say unto my sons Robert and Oliver and also my youngest daughters Ibby Ann and Betsey each a horse and saddle apiece to make them equal with the others of my children who have had. And moreover when it shall please God to take my dearly beloved wife Isabella I wish that all property in her possession be divided among my children provided if upon division there appears an insufficiency to support my daughter Phebe enough shall be retained for that purpose and I wish that three men of intelligence and unblemished character shall be appointed as commissioners to settle the point of sufficiency. And I do constitute my sons John and William as my executors. 9 October 1830." Robert Sparks signed his will by mark, although on earlier occasions he had written it. His uncle, Henry Sparks, signed as a witness, as did also H. Giles.

Isabella (Ford) Sparks, widow of Robert, lived for thirty years after Robert's death. She died May 19, 1861. Both are buried in Pleasureville. They were Baptist by faith. Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks were the parents of eleven children, as follow:
