SOME SPARKS PHOTOGRAPHS

On page 1497 (of the Quarterly), but shown below, we have reproduced four photographs of Sparks descendants, the originals of which have been loaned to us by Lucia A. (Mrs. Roy T.) Stephens of Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Stephens is a daughter of John Putnam Brown and a great-granddaughter of Abel Sparks (born 1767). A sketch of this branch of the Sparks family appeared in the Quarterly of December, 1958, Whole No. 24, pages 337-39. Mary Sparks, the mother of the five women whose pictures are shown on page 1497, was a daughter of 1.2.5.1.1.2 Abel and Sarah Sparks.

1.2.5.1.8 Abel Sparks (born 1767) was a son of 1.2.5.1 Solomon and Sarah Sparks of Surry County, North Carolina (see the December, 1955 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 12, page 98) for data on 1.2.5.1 Solomon and Sarah Sparks). Mary Sparks was born while her parents, Abel and Sarah Sparks, were living in Tennessee; she died on May 10, 1879, in Hampton, Franklin County, Iowa. She was married twice. Her first husband was Jacob Wagner (born 1807, died ca. 1844) by whom she had eight children, including Sarah Jane and Emdine Catherine whose pictures appear on page 1497.  Mary Sparks married as her second husband, Joseph Brown (born ca. 1810, died ca. 1860). They had seven children, three of whose pictures also appear on page 1497. All but one of Mary's fifteen children grew to maturity. Mrs. Stephens has reported that when her father, John Putnam Brown (1848-1920) was 18 years old, he had 98 cousins.

Mr. and Mrs. Stephens have two living children, Dorothy (Mrs. Richard A. Heider) and James. Their daughter Phyllis, who was born May 16, 1920, died on March 6, 1972; she had been a teacher In the Los Angeles Public Schools.
