THREE BRANCHES OF THE SPARKS FAMILY
IN EARLY MARION-MONROE COUNTIES, MISSOURI

by Paul E. Sparks

(Marion County, Missouri, was formed in 1822 from Ralls County. Monroe County Missouri, was formed in 1831 from Ralls County. These counties have a common boundary.)

Three branches of the SPARKS family settled in the Marion-Monroe Counties early in the history of Missouri. As far as we have been able to determine, they were not related. All three branches moved to Missouri from Kentucky; however, prior to their coming to Kentucky, two branches were in Virginia and the other branch was in Pennsylvania. Here are brief accounts of these Sparkses.

1. From Pennsylvania.

32.5.4 Orson Sparks (1792-1870), son of 32.25 Daniel and Sarah (Bogard) Sparks, lived in Bullitt County, Kentucky, and Scott County, Indiana. He married Peggy Burdett. He then went to Marion County, Missouri, ca. 1832 and appeared on the 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses of that county. See also pages 646-649 of the Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 38.

32.4.6 James Sparks (ca.1791-1851), probably a son of 32.4 Walter and Phoebe Sparks. Lived in Bullitt County, Kentucky. Went to Missouri ca. 1831. Married Nancy Kennet. Appeared on the 1840 census of Marion County, Missouri. See also page 544 of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 33.

2. From Orange-Culpeper-Madison Counties, Virginia. Four sons of 21.1.1.5 Robert and Isabella (Ford) Sparks of Madison County, Virginia, and Henry County, Kentucky.

21.1.1.5.2 James Parnell Sparks (1801-1846) married Sally Threlkeld. Went to Monroe County, Missouri, ca. 1839 where he appeared on the 1840 census. See also pages 1108-1121 of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 60.

21.1.1.5.5 William Madison Sparks (1805-1879) married Parthesia Baker. Went to Marion County, Missouri, ca. 1845 where he appeared on the 1850 census. See also page 1064 of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 58.

21.1.1.5.6 Henry Jefferson Sparks (1808-1888) married (first) Nancy Threlkeld. Went to Missouri prior to 1840 where he was listed on the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Monroe County. See also page 1064 of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 58.

21.1.1.5.8 Robert Sparks, Jr. (1811-1872) married Martha Pearcy. Went to Monroe County, Missouri, ca. 1839 where he appeared on the 1850 census. See also pages 1183-1198 of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 64.

3. From Fauquier-Prince William Counties, Virginia. Three brothers and two sisters, all children of 11.3 William Sparks of Prince William County, Virginia, and Harrison County and Bourbon County, Kentucky.

11.3.1 Nancy Sparks, born March 23, 1796, married Stephen Barton in 1814 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Was living in the household of her brother, William Sparks, when the 1850 census was taken of Monroe County, Missouri.

11.3.5 Mary ["Polly"] Sparks (ca.1802-1870) married Joseph Hannah in 1826 in Harrison County, Kentucky. Went to Marion County, Missouri, ca. 1830 and then to Knox County, Missouri, in 1843.

11.3.7 William N. (or A.) Sparks, born April 7, 1808 -1877, went to Monroe County, Missouri, ca. 1829 where he married Mary Jane Delaney in 1831. Appeared on the 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses of Monroe County.
