SPARKS HOUSEHOLDS APPEARING ON THE
1840 CENSUS OF IOWA TERRITORY

Iowa became a state in 1846; from 1838 until 1846 it had been organized as a Territory. When a census of Iowa Territory was taken in 1840, one household headed by a person named Sparks was found. That individual is shown below. For an explanation of the 1840 census, see page 3329 of the present issue of the Quarterly. A record of persons named Sparks (Sparkes and Sparks) found on the 1850 census of Iowa appeared in the Quarterly of December 1984 (Whole No. 128, pp. 2690-94). Earlier, in the June 1964 issue of the Quarterly, we published an incomplete record of Sparkses found on the 1850 census of Iowa - - interested readers, however, should refer to the corrected record published in December, 1984.
