SPARKS FAMILIES LISTED ON THE 1850 CENSUS OF ARKANSAS

(Editor's Note: A record of the Sparks families living in the Territory of Arkansas in 1830 was published in the September 1972 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 79, p. 1513. A record of the Sparks families found on the 1840 census of Arkansas appears in the present issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 103, page 2026.

Arkansas was a part of the Missouri Territory until 1819 when the Arkansas Territory was formed. The 1820 census of the territory has been lost. She remained a territory until 1836 when Arkansas was received into the union as the twenty-fifth state. At that time, thirty-four of her seventy-six counties had been formed. by 1850, another twelve counties had been created, bringing the total number to forty-six. Sparkses were found in eight. The counties in existence in 1850 in which no Sparks families were listed on the census were: Arkansas, Benton, Carroll, Chicot, Clark, Conway, Crittenden, Cross, Dallas, Desha, Franklin, Greene, Hempstead, Hot Springs, Independence, Izard, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lafayette, Lawrence, Lovely, Madison, Marion, Miller, Mississippi, Monroe, Montgomery, Newton, Perry, Phillips, Pike, Poinsett, Polk, Pope, Prairie, Pulaski, Randolph, St. Francis, Saline, Searcy, Union, Van Buren, Washington, White, and Yell.

In the following list, the page number refers to the page in the volume containing the particular county named. (The originals of these records are preserved in the National Archives.) The two numbers given below the page number are those supplied by the census taker as he progressed from one house to the next. The first was the house number; the second was the family number. These numbers are often the same, but when two families were found to be living in the same house, the sequences would therefore be different from that point on. These numbers are useful to the genealogist because one can frequently judge how near one family lived to another by comparing the numbers. Opposite each person's name is given his age, whether male or female, and the state in which he was born. Where the census taker listed occupation and value of real estate owned, this information has also been copied. Readers are reminded that census takers made occasional errors--they sometimes did not know how to spell unusual names and they sometimes misunderstood what was told to them. The information provided the census taker was sometimes in error.

Of the four heads of households named Sparks who appeared on the 1840 census of Arkansas, only one, Willis Sparks, appears on the 1850 census. Willis Sparks was in Crawford County in 1840, but by 1850 he had moved south to adjoining Scott County. (Sebastian County, which was formed in 1851, separates Scott from Crawford County today.) From the birthplaces given for the five youngest children of Martin Sparks in Ouachita County, it would appear that he should have appeared on the 1840 census of Arkansas, but he was not found.

Following is a detailed listing of all Sparkses found on the 1850 census of Arkansas, arranged alphabetically by counties:
