| (Editor's Note: Here we present a record of the persons named Sparks found listed on the federal census that was taken in South Carolina in 1850. Rather than repeating information given in previous issues of the Quarterly regarding the 1850 census, we refer the reader to our statement appearing in the introduction to the 1850 census of Virginia beginning on page 2932 of the September 1986 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 135. A record of Sparkses found in earlier censuses for South Carolina has been published in the Quarterly as follows: that for 1790 appeared on page 10 of the issue for June 1953, Whole No. 2; those for 1800, 1810, 1820, and 1830 appeared in the issue for September 1978, Whole No. 103, beginning on page 2032 and ending on page 2035. That for 1840 appeared in the issue for June 1971, Whole No. 74, pages 1413-14. In the issue for September 1956, Whole No. 15, we published a record of Sparkses found in the 1850 census of Union County, South Carolina, pages 164-66.
