KENTUCKY SPARKSES IN THE CIVIL WAR

Few states gave large numbers of men to serve both the Union and the Confederacy. Kentucky furnished nearly 80,000 Union soldiers, of whom nearly 11,000 were killed in battle or died from disease. No accurate figures can be compiled for Confederate soldiers, but estimates place that figure at over 35,000. Sparks men helped to swell the number in both the Union and the Confederate Army.
Although Kentucky had sympathy and kinship with the South, she refused to leave the Union. Instead, she tried to remain neutral and Governor Magoffin warned both President Lincoln and President Davis against invading Kentucky soil. But by early fall of 1861, men were on their way to military camps such as the Union Camp Dick Robinson in central Kentucky, or the Confederate Camp Burnett, just over the state line in Tennessee.
Kentucky abandoned her position of neutrality in September, 1861, when Confederate troops occupied Columbus and Hickman, followed by Grant's move into Paducah. Thereafter for nearly four years, Kentucky was never free of strife. Families were divided against each other and kinsmen fought under opposing banners.
In 1866, the State Legislature ordered the Adjutant-General to compile a record of Kentuckians who had served in the Union forces. In 1915, comparable records were published of Kentuckians who had served in the Confederate forces. Both records warn the reader to make allowance for the word "deserted," pointing out that in many instances men joined another command without the formality of a transfer. In other instances, men returned to their commands while others were cut off by the enemy and could not return. It will also be noted that there are obvious duplications.
