SOLDERS NAMED SPARKS WHO VOLUNTEERED FOR THE UNION ARMY IN MICHIGAN



A total of twenty-two soldiers named Sparks served in volunteer regiments from the state of Michigan during the Civil War. Their names, along with a brief statement regarding their service, appear in a 148-volume work entitled Michigan Soldiers and Sailors Individual Reccrds published at Lansing, Michigan, in ###191~. In this massive work, the records of 85,271 Michigan Civil War soldiers are recorded. Following are the records of those named Sparks:

SPARKS, ALBERTUS. Enlisted in Company M, Tenth Cavalry, February 22, 1865, at Grand Rapids, for 1 year, age 24. Mustered March 3, 1865. Joined regiment at Lenoir, Tenn., June 17, 1865. Discharged at Chattanooga, Tenn., September 30, 1865. (Vol. 140, p. 131)

SPARKS, ALBURTUS, or ALBERTUS, Ottawa County. Enlisted in Company I, Third Infantry, May 13, 1861, at Grand Rapids, for 3 years, age 21. Mustered June 10, 1861. Discharged for disability October, 1861. (Vol. 3, p. 106) (Note: He was probably the same soldier as just above.)

SPARKS, ALEXANDER. Enlisted in Company H, First Colored Infantry, January 12, 18614, at Detroit, for 3 years, age 35. Mustered January 114, 18614. Mustered out at Charleston, S.C., September 30, 1865. (Vol. 146, p. 93)

SPARKS, CITIZEN N. Enlisted in Company I, Seventeenth Infantry, August 29, 18614, at Jackson, for 1 year, age 23.

SPARKS, COMFORT (Veteran), Kalamazoo County. Enlisted in Company F, Third Cavalry, August 30, 1861, at
Kalamazoo, for 3 years, age 21. Mustered October 12, 1861. Reenlisted, as Corporal, January 19, 1864, at La Grange, Tenn., mustered January 27, 18614. Sergeant. Mustered out at San Antonio, Texas, February 12, 1866. (Vol. 33, p. 159)

SPARKS, CORNELIUS. Enlisted in Company A, Seventh Cavalry, February 13, 1864, at Niles, for 3 years. Mustered February 18, 1864. Joined regiment at Stevensburg, Va., March 18, 1864. Transferred to Company B, First Cavalry, November 17, 1865. Mustered out at Salt Lake City, U. T., March 10, 1866. Present residence (1915), Benton Harbor, Mich. (Vol. 37, p. 1214)

SPARKS, CYRUS L., Watrousville. Enlisted in First Company Sharpshooters, Twenty-seventh Infantry, February 20, 1864, at Ovid, for 3 years, age 19. Mustered March 1, 1864. Died of disease at Annapolis, Md., May 2, 1864. Buried in National Cemetery at Annapolis, Md. (Vol. 27, p. 124)

SPARKS, FIELDS, Hudson. Enlisted in Company F, Fifteenth Infantry, November 5, 1861, at Monroe, for 3 years, age 35. Mustered December 214, 1861. Died of disease at Shiloh, Tenn., June 18, 1862. Buried in National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Section 52, Grave No. 916. (Vol. 15, p. 158)

SPARKS, GEORGE. Enlisted in Company K, Twenty-seventh Infantry, December 31, 1863, at Scipio, for 3 years, age 24. Mustered January 5, 1864. Discharged at Washington, D.C., June 10, 1865. (Vol. 27, p. 125)

SPARKS, JAMES H., Ionia County. Enlisted in Company I, Third Infantry, February 214, 1862, at Saranac, for 3 years, age 18. Mustered February 24, 1862. Deserted May 7, 1864. (Vol. 3, p. 106)

SPARKS, NORMAN S. Enlisted in Company F, Thirteenth Infantry, June 20, 1863, at Jackson, for 3 years. Mustered June 20, 1863. Joined regiment at Hillsboro, Tenn., July 25, 1863. Discharged for disability at Chattanooga, Tenn., December 26, 1863. (Vol. 13, p. 133)

SPARKS, PHILEMON E., Leoni. Enlisted in Company F, Twentieth Infantry, August 14, 1862, at Grass Lake, for 3 years, age 18. Mustered August 18, 1862. Discharged at Annapolis, Md., July 15, 1865. Died in 1895. Buried in Grove Cemetery, Chelsea, Mich. (Vol. 20, p. 89)

SPARKS, REUBEN. Enlisted in unassigned, Eighth Cavalry, August 27, 18614, at Erie, for 1 year, age 18. Mustered September 2, 1864. Discharged on Surgeon's certificate of disability at Jackson, Mich., October 26, 18614. (Vol. 38, p. 143)

SPARKS, SAMUEL, Fentonville. Enlisted in Company F, Engineers and Mechanics, August 214, 1864, at Holly, for 1 year, age 44. Mustered August 27, 1864. Joined regiment at Tilton, Ga., September 16, 1864. Discharged at Washington, D.C., June 6, 1865. (Vol. 143, p. 191)

SPARKS, SPENCER N., Niles. Enlisted in Company A, Seventh Cavalry, September 8, 1862, at Miles, for 3 years, age 20. Mustered October 13, 1862. Promoted Bugler. Transferred to Invalid Corps, August, 1863. Discharged at expiration of term of service at Cincinnati, Ohio, October 13, 1865, from Company D, Sixth Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps.
